Emperor Penguins: A Critical Analysis
Boomy: “March of the Conservatives: Penguin Film as Political Fodder”
Julezyme: oh my - “At a conference for young Republicans, the editor of National Review urged participants to see the movie because it promoted monogamy. A widely circulated Christian magazine said it made "a strong case for intelligent design."”
Boomy: argh!!!!
Julezyme: dude, but the penguins are only monogamous for ONE YEAR at a time!
Boomy: AND WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF INTELLIGENT DESIGNER SETS UP THAT BULLSHIT SYSTEM?
Julezyme: i feel like it makes if anything the opposite case - why would an intelligent designer put the cute little penguins through all that misery just to breed?
Boomy: and NATURAL SELECTION is at work
Julezyme: right! like, these birds who ended up in antarctica adapted to their shitty environment and the only ones who survive are the ones who survive all those hardships.
Boomy: maybe the creationists think they are all like tiny little jobs (Job from the Bible)
Boomy: and now i see how conservatives would be so into that, in the race to make everything into a parable of evangelical christian virtues...
Julezyme: "That any one of these eggs survives is a remarkable feat - and, some might suppose, a strong case for intelligent design," WTF???
Julezyme: "And I have to say, penguins are the really ideal example of monogamy." DID THEY MISS THE ONE YEAR PART???
Boomy: also how they spend most of that year apart from one another.
Boomy: it's really more like a rave than a marriage...
Boomy: like, you go to the party, hook up, party down, then wander off looking for food
Julezyme: hahahahaha
Julezyme: "The penguin is falling behind, is like some Christians falling behind. The path changes every year, yet they find their way, is like the Holy Spirit."
Julezyme: it is not anything like that.
Boomy: it just makes me mad, because you would think that conservatives, or liberals or whatever stupid labels you use, could just fucking agree that we all think the plight of the emperor penguin is both fascinating and unbelievable. we could just all say, hey, we all liked that movie. instead, they need to turn it into some sort of divisive natalist narrative.
Julezyme: i know. let's do a marxist reading.
Boomy: oh, it’s begging to be done.
Boomy: 1: the good of any one single penguin is clearly sacrificed for the good of the collective.
Boomy: 2. when the males are left holding the eggs, they huddle in that circle and they ALL TAKE TURNS having time on the ends (where it is cold) as well as in the inner circle where it is warmest.
Boomy: 2a There is no ruling class that occupies the middle of the circle and forces the "workers" to warm them while freezing themselves.
Julezyme: 3. the penguin chicks are reared by the collective rather than simply by the nuclear family
Boomy: HELL YES. good one.
Boomy: also they do not stay in family units, but rather go off with the other penguins that were born at the same time (DARE I SAY, WITH THEIR COMRADES?) to the open ocean.
Julezyme: and . . . free love . . . year-long temporary marriages . . . much like hippies.
Boomy: exactly
Julezyme: dude, why are penguins such fucking hippie communists?
Boomy: and the collective owns the means of production (nerdy pun)
Julezyme: ha
Boomy: seriously
Boomy: psychoanalytic analysis could also be possible.
Boomy: and, obviously, feminist
Julezyme: well, but you know, it really tells more about who WE are and what we PROJECT onto the penguins - a reflection of our own inner struggle and that of society . . .
Boomy: you are an academic elitist flipflopper
Julezyme: but maybe there are no penguins. what is a "penguin" anyway? how do we choose to define penguinhood?
Boomy: how do we choose to define penguinhood? ------ heheheheheh :)
Boomy: but i mean, those poor shmucks the penguins don't need us to put all our baggage on them,
Boomy: they clearly have enough to deal with.
Julezyme: yeah, what with the walking in the snow and the leopard seals
Boomy: and the whole egg on your feet for two months under your crazy stomach pouch thingy
Julezyme: so: leopard seals = satan/capitalism/the id . . . whoah, i think i am on to something!
Boomy: we should write a rebuttal
Julezyme: or are they the superego? and the ice is the id? what are seagulls?
Boomy: oh! and those predator birds! they should be something too!
Julezyme: seriously though - how fucking cute are baby penguins? are baby penguins as cute as taft was fat?
Boomy: dude. they are so totally fucking cute. as cute as taft was fat in 1908.
Boomy: (his fattest)
Boomy: anyway. we are totally on to something with our alternate penguin analyses.
Julezyme: we are. but i had better get back to work.
Boomy: me too. talk to you later. but i am saving this exchange for further explorations-
Julezyme: sweet.
