Can't Be Bothered To Do Proper Post
1) Take that "Intelligent Design"! Booyakasha!
2) Been cleaning/reorganizing my apartment, slowly. Pledge is so cool. It makes wood shiny and removes dust! Wow.
3) Had an amazing weekend with The Ladies From The Burgh last weekend. We should all live in the same place. Like an island, where we can found a private research institute/eco-friendly resort. It will be designed by Brand. Brookburg will curate our science museum (in collaboration with Boomy, obv.) and be in charge of education outreach (with me!). Tilda will implement environmentally friendly transportation options as well as running a progressive women's yeshiva/drumming circle. Boomy and Springy will be the Faculty of History and I will run the Division of Life Sciences. Boomy's brother and Springy's sister will be our legal team. Boomy's sister will be the medical staff. Balloon Lady and Tapioca will be in charge of media and entertainment. My cousin Ethyl and her partner will be in charge of mountain biking, geology, and the science fiction library. There are many other postions that will open up in our delightful island home as well, if I am leaving anyone out . . .
4) Was a big slacker yesterday with Boomy, which was so fun, and fuck it, I am going home tomorrow so it's not like I wanted to start anything new in lab.
4a) New plasmid arrived in solution, hurrah. Many thanks to Nadine in Canada. We'll see if I can hang on to the bloody DNA this time around.
4b) Spent a schmillion dollars at Origins last night, but I have to say, Make A Difference face stuff is nectar of the gods. And I got a "free" ginger souffle lotion thingy. But then went to dinner where Balloon Lady told us about how these kids in Atlanta can't afford $25 to join the Boys' and Girls' Club and it made me want to return my elitist face cream and sponsor half a dozen kids to go play basketball after school.
5) Have been reading weird web things about the submission of the wife in various religions. Judiasm is winning but only by a nose. This could take a long time to rant about, but let me just sum up: Yentl and Mandy Patinkin. Ponder at will.

dude. mandy patinkin. totally.
although i have to say that my studies/experiences show that all religions suck for women in their most fundamentalist modes, pretty much equally. whether they are denying women the inheritance of a planet in the afterlife, forcing them to give birth in total silence without drugs, or deeming them unclean for long swaths of their adult lives, women get raw deals in the most literal interpretations of organized religious doctrines every single time.
in grudging defense of my tribe in its most orthodox forms, women do have the right to refuse their husband's sexual advances, ask for a divorce, and also there aren't any sects of judaism that restrict a woman from learning to read or write. so that's something. a thousand years ago that would have been big stuff.
though if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, check out the rules for the bedikah cloth.
ps. hey, are you trying to say something about barbara streisand's nose in that second-to-last sentence? i won't have yentl blogged about that way. no sirree.
Yentl's nose? No way! Babs is totally hot as Anshel - not quite as hot as Avigdor when he comes out of the water, of course, but pretty hot.
To elaborate for the precious few readers who are not me or Boomele, Yentl wanted to study Torah with Avigdor as well as shag him senseless, but she wanted to do both as equal partners, which their traditions were telling her they couldn't do. Avigdor wanted this too, which is why he thought he was gay for Anshel even though he was engaged to the adorable Hadass (Amy Irving). Yentl wanted to be Hadass in some ways, because she was this ideal of womanhood )who Avigdor loved), but in the end it was more compelling for her to study and pursue her own agenda than cave to gender norms. (Also she kind of had to get the hell out of town when everyone figured out she was a woman who married another woman - oops.)
In the final scene she goes to America and sings some more rather than dying, which Boomy might have expected, which is what makes this a great ending. (And Anshel ends up with Hadass, who has been bitten by the learning bug, so good luck to them!)
My point - our overcaffeinated points - being that many of us (though not all, sigh) would rather have a partnership of equals, friends as well as lovers, rather than adapt ourselves to the gender definitions that religion or society impose on us. This is particularly difficult for intelligent, compassionate, sincerely devout women, like Yentl, and are both deeply committed to their religion but challenge patriarchal gender norms.
I wish those people, who know who they are, every bit of luck and blessing in their searches.
Sorry all - I have gotten way stream of consciousness with the writing lately. Will sort self out soon, and re-read comments before posting. ;)
