THANK YOU for doing this!!! I agree 100% but did not have your authority to send out a similar email :-) . You put on paper what I have been mumbling to air for months!

The time has come, the walrus said,
To talk of many things:
Of how to use the TC hood,
Of safety and cleanings,
Of why contamination starts,
And other such dealings,
For if you leave a mess in there,
The senior graduate student will publicly humiliate you and suspend you from TC hood useage for a period to be determined ...

Okay, the rhyme scheme got away from me there. This is just one of those periodic Tissue Culture Nazi emails.

1) When you are finished in the hood, remove all you stuff, spray the whole area with the pink ethanol, wipe it down, and then spray it again.

2) Don't leave your stuff in the hood. This includes tubes, cuvettes, dead mice, etc.

3) But DO leave the communal bottles of PBS and ddH2O, as it is really handy to have those things in there.

4) If your pipet touches the lip of the bottle or anything else in the hood, DON'T put it back in the communal PBS bottle.

5) If tips or pasteur pipets run out, or if there are like 2 pipets left in the box, go and get a new box and put it in the hood. On a related note, if the box is empty, don't just leave it in the hood.

6) Don't leave things, e.g. pipettors, on the front bit where the air comes out. This disrupts the laminar flow. Put these things back in the holders or on top of the hoods on the little shelf.

7) Coulter counter: When you are done with it, FLUSH it out with the blue solution. Watch the little box to see that the nozzle is not clogged up with gunk. Then take your cuvettes over to the sink, rinse them out with DI water, and put them on the rack. Don't leave them on the counter. And put the caps back on the dispensers.

8) Microscopes: Don't leave the lights on when you are not actively using the microscopes. The bulbs burn out and this is very annoying.

9) Incubators: For the love of whatever diety you might of might not believe in, if you SPILL MEDIA in the incubator, WIPE IT OFF!!!!!!! This is absolutely disgusting and wrong. Think about all the little germies that will be so happy to grow in delicious cell culture media in a nice warm incubator. Then think about SPORES infecting your cells. Then think about endotoxins making your cells very sick. Then think about spores and endotoxins making MY cells sick and imagine what I would do if I found out that my cells bit the dust and it was your fault. Not a pretty picture, folks.

10) When you are finished with a media bottle, rinse it out so that it no longer froths and put it in the special TC bottle bucket.

12) Bleach (or ethanol) your cells before you pour them down the sink, or use the aspirator next to the sink. (Turn that off when done using it.)

13) Periodically make sure you do not have old, crusty plates in the incubator which have been forgotten about and no longer hold viable cells but are breeding grounds for GERMS and ICKY CRITTERS. Dishes with yellow media or dried out grunge will be chucked in the bin, unless obviously labeled as in use and supposed to be yellow or dry and grungy.

and finally, 14) When you notice something is running out, either order more of it or tell someone who can order more of it!

If these demands are not met, a disaster beyond your imaginations will occur.

Just kidding about that last part .... still, though.

Love,
TC Police
