Authoritarianism, Jesus Camp, and the Machinations of a Facist State
Bear with me whilst I describe some meanderings about the webosphere today.
Fisrt stop, this discussion at Pooflingers about the appeal to authority. I made my comment before I read the other comments, but it seems like everyone has got the same idea, which is cool.
Next, an amusing analysis of Jesus Camp, with emphasis on how a Christian camp that trains youngsters to obey divinely appointed leaders without question and be willing to die for their faith/nation in a war against the enemies of god/the state is pretty much exactly the same thing as a Muslim camp that trains youngsters to obey divinely appointed leaders without question and be willing to die for their faith/nation in a war against the enemies of god/the state. Except that the Xtians haven't yet got around to the suicide bombs.
To steal a quote from the above blog:
When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross."
- Sinclair Lewis
But that couldn't happen here, right?
I had a conversation with a Hungarian ex-pat, who left Budapest around '56, who was appalled that there's not been an outcry against the Detainee Bill and implicit loss of Habeas Corups plus expansion of Presidential power tip-toeing into the facistic realm.
Let's all get more upset about this, okay? Please? It's all fun and games until somebody loses a habeas corpus.
