Lake Effect Snow

Clear and cold today. It hasn't snowed yet, which makes maybe 2 out of 5 of my years in New England where I didn't get snowed upon in October. Last year the first snow was October 11th, according to my classmate who had to play soccer in it, and I think the last snow was in mid-April.

My esteemed colleague from the UK has noted that Americans are inordinately fond of talking about the weather. Especially snow storms. This is true. In fact, when we had this conversation in a bar, the bartender came over and started telling us all about the winters in Buffalo. They get some serious snow in Buffalo. Lake Effect Snow. Typically my home town is too far south for Lake Effect Snow, but we get it occasionally. Boston, on the other hand, gets Nor'Easters, which are almost as good.
