Why is it called the "World" Series, anyway?
So, I'm not a big baseball fan - not a fan of any sports, really - but I was quite pleased that the White Sox won last night (sweep!). Nothing was going to top last year's Red Sox Extravaganza, and the Buccos didn't make it, so I didn't really care so much about the World Series this year. Still, I am pleased for the following reasons:
1) The White Sox haven't won in 88 years, so that's nice for them.
2) Pitcher Mark Buehrle looks like my friend Coco-loco from uni.
3) That meant that the Astros lost and Barbara Bush looked all pissed off. Ha ha! (GB Sr. just looked heartbroken, which made me almost feel bad for him - but no.)

A Canadian friend made me aware of why it is called the "World" series. Like lots of limeys I saw this title as classic American chauvinism. But apparently the series was originally sponsored by the New York World newspaper.
Also, American football is called "football" because it is played on foot, rather than on horseback; this is why rugby is called "rugby football" and "soccer" is a nickname for "association football" - they're all football not because you kick the ball but because you run around on your feet.
Well seems though it is the world series, america are doing really well as i believe they've won it every year! lol Come on you yanks! Just admit you blatantly copied it from rugby and then tried to make it indepentant by declaring it the world series!
How amazing that the americans always win the "world" series. What a joke.
